Top 5 ways to keep your dog cool this summer
Share
As the sun proudly beams down, casting a warm glow across our gardens and streets, summer promises endless days of outdoor fun. But for our furry friends, the soaring temperatures can pose serious health risks.
Here are our top five tips to help your dog beat the heat and enjoy summer safely.
1. Create Cool Retreats
Dogs can overheat quickly, so providing a cool, shady spot is essential. If your dog spends a lot of time in the garden, ensure there are plenty of shaded areas where they can rest away from direct sunlight. Indoors, set up a comfortable resting place away from windows that magnify the heat. Cooling mats, available at pet stores, can also offer a refreshing respite for your pet. Alternatively, a simple damp towel for them to lie on can do the trick.

2. Stay Hydrated
Hydration is crucial during the hot months. Ensure your dog has access to fresh, cool water at all times. Consider multiple water stations both indoors and outdoors, and if you're venturing out, bring a portable water dish. To encourage your pet to drink more, you might add ice cubes to the water bowl—many dogs find this not only cooling but rather entertaining.
3. Mind the Walking Hours
The timing of your dog walks is key during summer. Avoid walking your dog during the peak heat times, typically between 10 AM and 4 PM. Early morning or later in the evening when the sun is less intense provides not only cooler temperatures but also safer ground for their paws. Remember, if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.
4. Invest in Protective Gear
Consider protective gear for your four-legged friend. Dog booties can protect their paws from hot pavements and sand, while cooling vests, which can be soaked in water, help to lower your dog’s body temperature during walks. These vests work through evaporation and can be a fantastic tool to regulate your dog's temperature, especially during a heatwave.
5. Frozen Treats to the Rescue
What's summer without ice cream? Your dog thinks so too! Whip up some dog-friendly frozen treats to keep them cool. Use ingredients that are safe for dogs, such as plain yogurt, peanut butter, and fruits like blueberries and bananas. Pour the mix into ice cube trays or special dog treat molds and freeze. These treats are not only a delicious way to cool down but also provide a fun and engaging activity for your pet.
Summer should be a season of joy for you and your dog. By taking these precautions, you can ensure that your pet enjoys the warm weather safely. Always watch for signs of overheating in your dog, which can include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or even vomiting. If you suspect your dog is overheating, move them to a cooler area immediately and consult your vet.
